Buying used? Check these four things
This goes for any used tire, here or anywhere, before it goes on your car.
- Age
The last 4 digits after “DOT” are the week and year it was made. 2419 means week 24 of 2019. Florida heat ages rubber faster.
- Tread
Worn out at 2/32″. Penny test: Lincoln's head goes in upside down. If you can see all of his head, the tread is too low.
- Cracks and bulges
No cracks in the sidewall or between the treads (dry rot), no bulges, no cords showing.
- Leaks and old patches
Ask for a leak check after mounting, and where any old patch is. Repairs only belong in the tread area.

Ask at the counter
- What's the DOT date on this tire?
- Is mounting and balancing in that price?
- Is there a fee for my old tires?
- If it leaks next week, what happens?
